WEP/GPO Analysis
If you worked in a government job not covered by Social Security, your benefits may be significantly affected. Let's find out.
Rules That Affected Millions of Public Servants
For decades, two provisions of Social Security law — the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) — significantly reduced Social Security benefits for teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other public servants who worked in jobs not covered by Social Security.
WEP could reduce a worker's own Social Security retirement benefit by up to $587/month. GPO could reduce or eliminate spousal and survivor benefits entirely for those receiving a government pension.
With the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act in January 2025, these provisions have been eliminated for most affected workers. If you were previously told your benefits would be reduced, you should have your situation re-evaluated immediately.
